Sparkling iced chocolate recipe (egg cream)

Recipe for an old-fashioned egg custard or “sparkling iced chocolate”, the perfect cold drink on a hot summer day. Made with sweet fruit chocolate syrup for a naturally low carb treat.

So there I was, standing in line at the grocery store.

The old gentleman in front of me was obviously bored of the long queue as well. After a few minutes, he turned around and started looking at my shopping cart.

There wasn’t much to see as I don’t buy much at the grocery store. There was a bag of organic Fuji apples, sparkling water, and several bags of Epsom salts.

Yes, pretty much one of the most boring shopping carts you’ve ever seen.

This gentleman fixes his gaze on the sparkling water bottles and begins telling me a story about his childhood in Queens, New York, and that delicious drink he and his brothers made out of soda.

Curious, I asked him what kind of drink he was making.

What is Fizzy Frozen Chocolate?

With a wink he told me that they had mixed soda, milk and chocolate syrup and it tasted so good on a hot summer day. He went on to describe how hard to find quality food was and this drink made the milk stretch a bit more during the Depression.

Even more curious because this drink did not seem particularly delicious to me, I asked how much soda and milk had been used.

He said the drink was mostly club soda with just a little milk and chocolate syrup.

He assured me my kids would love it and I should try it.

Later that day I made some exactly as described and gave some to my boys to try. They loved it and agreed it was very refreshing in the summer heat.

We decided to call it Sparkling Frozen Chocolate. In other parts of the country, it is apparently known simply as “egg custard”.

I recommend using homemade sweet chocolate fruit syrup for this recipe. If you decide to buy, it is better to choose organic. This avoids the GMO white beet sugar in conventional brands (labeled “sugar”).

It’s a fun choice to make if you’re out of homemade kombucha tea or other types of cultivated drinks and want something bubbly and flavorful to enjoy.
